Freeware Utilities, Energy Crisis, and WAYN

  • Handy page for Freeware Utilities
  • Good to see that if we experienced an energy shortage, Portland is one of the top 10 cities in the USA suspected of being able to cope the best. All them Priuses out there wouldn’t need to fill up as much as cities that don’t have as many. We have the max - that’s electric I think, and of course, very easy to bike around this city.
  • Got asked to join WAYN today by a friend. Went through the sign-up process. Took like 4 of 5 pages, and after it all, do I really want to submit all my trips to it? Not sure how it helps me…I already have a history on this site to a degree. Anyone else try it?

From what I see, that report is specific to an oil crisis…not energy in general. I’d be interested to see how that report looks if they take into consideration the heating costs in the northern states that are at the top of the list…things might even out a bit more. The 6-8 months a year that I don’t really need heat or air conditioning here in Phoenix might move us up the list. I’m sure Tucson would move up quite a bit too.

Nice try Phoenix lover. You, your highways, big trucks, and spread out metropolis will NEVER be energy efficient. :)

6-8 months without AC in phoenix? Right…

That WAYN thing looks kind of cool. Maybe you could have a similar meet-up / location status idea on BNA.

Sean, you’ve spent how many days in Phoenix? I’ve spent alot more time in PDX than you have in PHX. Last I heard, highways are better for gas mileage than stop signs and lights every 1000 feet like in PDX. Big trucks? As if there aren’t any in PDX. Just because we spread out a bit doesn’t mean we consume more energy. (ouch…PDX population density is pretty high compared to where I’m living http://tinyurl.com/mdmzn vs. http://tinyurl.com/pd59e …even PHX isn’t as bad as PDX - http://tinyurl.com/pkfx6) With the spread comes more commerce centers so we drive shorter distances to get to the stuff we need and people have more choices for living close to work.

Mika, I went 7 months without AC this winter. Turned off the AC in September and just turned it back on three days ago…and didn’t use much heat over the winter.

There’s a reason that the Phoenix area has 4 of the 20 (and 7 of the top 50) fastest growing cities in it - http://www.citymayors.com/gratis/uscities_growth.html - People actually WANT to live here ;)

…but it’s all good ‘cuz if we all liked the same place things would get boring.

If your company (bootsnall) is an online community why would you join another (WAYN)?
