Did you know DPS was written by a high school student?

Everyone loves a good inspirational Teacher movie. Perhaps because people had one or wish they had.

Here are some others:
To Sir with Love
Lean on Me
Stand and Deliver
Mr. Holland’s Opus
Up the down stair case
Man without a Face
Blackboard Jungle
The Emperor’s Club
even Teachers was pretty good

However, some teachers usually dislike some of these movies. Teaching is always much much harder than it is portrayed in the movies.

Tom Schulman wrote “Dead Poets Society.” Sold the screenplay in 1988…The film was made in 1989. Schulman was born in 1951….

What inspired you to write Dead Poets Society? It is just such a great film.

I was in that place, The Actor’s and Director’s Lab, I had a great teacher there, and we would bring this teacher in every six weeks or so to review the work. This man was an amazing teacher. After every class all of us would go out and say we have got to do something relating to this class, and we were very excited and we wanted to change the world.

I started thinking about writing a script about an acting class, the teacher, and the influence of that teacher on his students. But after awhile it seemed like all the students were the same characters, so I started thinking back and I remembered a teacher I had when I was a sophomore in high school, an English teacher, who was also a very inspiring teacher. So, I sat [the situation] there and the character, the boy who wants to be the actor, was the only vestige of that first script. I think I found that the English teacher was a better mouthpiece and he could say more interesting things than an acting teacher.

Before I began staying home with my boys, I would watch Lean On Me every year before school started. As a teacher, that is my absolute favorite movie. I’d get so excited about starting another year filled with so my goals, opportunities and possibilities. I find that flick very inspiring.
