Phocuswright and Webmasterworld this week

I’m at my normal blogging spot in PDX at 5:30 am. No pictures this time…getting lazy with old age.

Here’s to hoping that I will be blogging from the conferences this week. Looking forward to meeting and learning from other folks. They are terming the Phocuswright conference “Travel 2.0”, I think in reference to the Web 2.0 stuff. Yeah, yeah, yeah…hope it has more to it than, “tag it”, “blog it”, “meta search it”, “it’s built on ajax” crap that I hear many times…hell, maybe even I spout sometimes. Oh no, I’m turning into a web 2.0 wanker, just like the folks I make fun of.

How to make great products

We’ve been busting our little arses the past few weeks as we prepare for our year-end meeting…and something that keeps coming up for me is…”How do we make great products“.

We have been around for 8 years and have various levels of success…and some of the things we do are gr8 from some travelers perspectives…but I don’t think we are nailing it on the head just yet.

The past 2 years, we have grown from a 6 person company to a 19 person company – the all the points of contact between has increased way more than the 13 peeps. Think about it – 19 peeps potentially staying in contact with 19 = 19 x 19 = 361 potential points of contact. Just keeping it all organized, knowing who does what, who is supposed todo what has been a challenge. Gone are the days of Nick, Chris, Sean and Ant in one room doing it all.

We refocused last year-end to focus on making the customer experience awesome…and in we are moving in that direction. Not there yet. Getting our processes worked out is a challenge – seems like the last 5 to 8% of a project is where we get delayed or things we are not connecting the dots to finish it near perfectly and get it according to our specs.

I am excited to meet away from the office to listen, learn, make decisions and make better products that travelers like me, drool over. 🙂

Google Trends and World Cup Bets

  • Google Trends
  • Bet on the World Cup: We have had some interest in betting on the site. Check out all the different bets – more coming soon as well.
  • Bob is out of town for 3 or 4 days and his blogging on WCBlog will be limited.  Chris and I will attempt to cover for him.  It could get ugly.  After reading this guy for 4 months, I feel inadequate as a World Cup Blogger

MAC support from Friends

I am pretty sure I have a few mates that read this that are avid MAC users.  I have a few questions for my 12" ibook.

1) When I click on a url inside of my mail program (Thunderbird) – it opens up Safari (a browser that I do not use) – I would like it to default to Firefox – how?

2) When I click on a mailto: linkin firefox – it defaults to Apple’s mail program – I would like it to goto Thunderbird – how?

Any help would be appreciated. 🙂
