End of Portland Summer Thoughts

We’re wrapping up the summer and lotsa vacations this month here at BootsnAll. Here are some exciting projects and excellent travel guides/sites that we have been building this summer in our Portland office.

Check out our new Italy Travel Guide. It is getting near being ready to launch and has loads of information for peeps going to Italy. Well done Jessica.

The Offside Soccer Blog has about 60 blogs on it now. Insane growth and tonnes of passionate soccer bloggers.

Carrie, our Business Travel Blogger has been cranking out interesting posts for almost a year now. Now that I am do “biz travel” quite a bit I find her posts helpful. Maybe you will too.

Cheers – off to Chicago for the weekend. Cubs game on Saturday and Fantasy Football draft on Monday nite.

Geography does not interfere with work

I just read Mr. Feld’s thoughts on geography/work and it reminded me of my hopes and dreams regarding this…

I am not an investor/VC like him – but I do manage the BootsnAll Travel Network and when we started some almost 9 years ago, we definitely thought that in a few years – distance/geography would be less of a barrier to work that it was in the 90s. Today, over 1/2 of BTN’s staff and contractors don’t work in the home office (Portland, OR) or do only part of the time. We are able to collaborate and track each other’s movements easily with the tools available today.

The good part of this is each person has more control over their time. i.e. not punching in at 9 and out at 5. The same thing could also be termed a bad part though – always being connected to each other and work. See this new NoSo Social Network as an example of being connected too much.

For me, I am not a social network junky, though I do participate in them and I am super happy and thankful to have the tools that we have today and be able to connect with folks all over the globe from the comfort of my desk. It makes travelling and connecting with other that much better.

Some Links and travel thoughts

  • Tony Wheeler visited BootsnAll
  • I am excited that my old friend Jen Leo is getting married in Vegas next week. She is an awesome old friend and it is fun to see her get jacked up for her big day. Of course, having it in Sin City should be fun for the guests as well.
  • Weather in the Pacific Northwest is wonderful in summer.

BnA Travel Stuff
We are cranking away here at BnA. Typically, the 1st half of the year is the time of the year that we make hay so to speak. People are planning trips during the Northern Hemisphere Winter/Spring and are off travelling in the summer. It has been a good year so far, though there are still major challenges ahead.

We started off years ago as a few travelers, who were building a website/community. Our growth far outstripped out capabilities as programmers so the past few years we gathered together what I think is a solid team and smart people to help us continue to grow and build awesome services for independent travellers. I’m excited about getting the final person of the puzzle figured out soon.

Donovan has been reaching out to lotsa adventure minded folks that don’t have a lot of time, but want more than just a week at the beach getting drunk. As usual, folks are into Mt. Kilimanjaro and the video we produced on Mt. Kili gets folks excited about the possibility of climbing it. Donovan is taken off for Nepal and Tibet this fall to experience some of the trips he sells himself. I too am considering going on this Nepal Annapurna Base Camp Trip. Anyone wanna join me?

Tag any thread on BnA message boards

We just launched a new feature into Alpha phase on our Message boards. Now topic starters and admins can tag threads with relevant keywords.

Why is this important?

As our threads get tagged – it makes it extremely easy to find discussions about stuff that you care about.

For example: I just tagged this thread with Lonely Planet ( and all the threads about that keyword will be listed. Over time, this should be an excellent way to organize the content on the boards into micro niches of information.

Not many other message board systems have this, so I am proud to see our team get this feature out. Hopefully all the active Booties will like it.

Last Travel Sites Standing Alone: BootsnAll Travel Network and Virtual Tourist

Mergers and Acquisitions left and right in the online travel space. Congrats to our friends at WorldHum, who got acquired by the TravelChannel.

Many of our competitors/partners have been gobbled up in the past 2 years.

I’m sure there are more. There are only a few big ones left – VT – who else?

How do I raise my first round?: Panel Notes

I just arrived in San Jose for the TIECON Entrepreneurship Conference to participate on a panel called: How do I raise my 1st round?

For those of you that know me, know that I never did raise a 1st or any round for the BootsnAll Travel Network. So you might be wondering, why am I on this panel? They asked me to join hoping that I might be a good example of a company that doesn’t take/need the 1st round.

I hope to listen, learn and share.

Travel Treasure Hunt

Since May 1st – we have been running a Travel Treasure Hunt on BootsnAll.

For all my friends who don’t know about it we are giving away an Around the World Air Ticket, a Trip to Turkey, 2 x 1st class Eurail passes and more. Anyone can play and win. There are about 1000 registrants and only 100 or so people are up to date on it so far. So your chances are very good to win even if you start now.

This is not your McDonald’s contest where you have a 1 in a million shot at something decent.

Check out how to play and Contest Message Board for more info.

Vacation Rentals on BootsnAll

As I get older, I am not always crashing on the beach, in the cheapest guesthouse, or at a friend’s place so much anymore. I appreciate and nice place that has a lot of the ammenties that I enjoy at home like internet, kitchen, deck. In the past 18 months, I have rented apartment and/or Vacation rentals in Europe, Africa, North America, and Central America. So the service that we are launching has me stoked.

Vacation Rentals

It is a very soft launch, but we still have a tonne of properties. See our Sunriver Oregon Rentals page. Lotsa inventory baby! I’m telling me girlfriend to start the booking process here next time. 🙂

Coming soon on this section:
– filtering via price, bedrooms, and more.
