Blogging is so easy: Bill Simmons

The Sports Guy was at the Super Bowl Media day and took some pictures and posted some comments about it. It is a really good take/recap of what Media Day is like from his perspective.

The funny thing is that no one really does stuff like this. The Behind the Scenes stuff that is so interesting. We used to do quite a bit of it on BootBlog. Nick still does a lot of it on BaliBlog. It is such an easy piece todo, almost any blogger can do this type of piece. Wanna create compelling content? Cover an event and don’t try to right the AP story on it…have an opinion, take some pictures. It’s not gonna a win a Pulitzer, but it sure is entertaining and informative in its own way.

Ben Stein on Capitalism

He makes some good points about Capitalism:

  • how it has been good for a lot of people (including himself)
  • how the whole system is built on trust

He wrote the article while talking about how he enjoys the fruits of capitalism, but wonders if it’ll keep going like this forever based on today’s events of dishonesty at so many levels in so many companies.

I wonder the same thing sometimes. The US has had a good run from a few colonies a few 100 years ago to the economic superpower in the world. It probably won’t last forever…just remember history always repeats itself. Always.

Sports Illustrated not linking.

SI has a rumors page and quoted theoffside, but as you’d expect of a big publisher…no link. At least they mentioned the name. Nice one Bob. Just woulda been nice if they linked out. Bob and all of our Bloggers are crazy arse linkers. The web of course is built on links. Check out the Calacanis bit about linking as well.

It’s just crap. Of course, that section sucks anyway. Name a big/quality blog/site that doesn’t link out.

theOffside Soccer Store

I am happy to announce our newest store in the BootsnAll Travel Network, theOffside Soccer Store. We had a damn popular World Cup Store this past summer and we figured we’d make this one bigger/better.

It has 1000s of products and even if you are an old fart like me and don’t play anymore, there are tonnes of jerseys, DVD’s and Fan type stuff to browse and buy.

1st time in a Country: Belize

I’m going to Belize in April for the 1st time. It has been awhile since I have travelled to a new country/region on this earth so I am getting a bit excited. Having Del.icio.us to help me remember all the stuff I find about Belize is super helpful. I’ll just keep bookmarking and when I get close to going…it’ll be super easy to find it again. Yer baby!

Small Farmers are almost gone

My pops was raised on a small farm back in PA in the late 40s and 50s. Many folks like my pops used to live on small farms and be able to make a modest living. KC and I discussed last night, the plight of the small/non-corporate farmer. From what I can see, it is a very difficult business today. In fact, it almost ain’t a business.

She put me onto Agriculture of the Middle.

This term refers to a disappearing sector of mid-scale farms/ranches and related agrifood enterprises that are unable to successfully market bulk commodities or sell food directly to consumers.

I am sure there is so much more to this than I am aware of. Any thoughts?

2007: What will we do at BootsnAll?

We are already 3+ weeks into the new year, but we are still laying out what we want to get done in ’07. I’m nervous about it because we are focusing more than we ever have.

One (of many) of my downfalls as the leader of BnA the past 8+ has been how easily I get distracted and start new projects. We’ve learned a tonne from the successes and the failures…now it is time to work on the stuff that works. Grow BnA to a point where we are providing an excellent experience in the following:

– Integrated Travel Planning Experience and Research
– Tools for travelers while traveling and to connect/share their experiences

The trick is, is todo the 2 points above in a simple way for folks to understand/interact with. It’s the beauty of some of Apple’s products and probably some of your favorite internet applications. Make it easy!

We’ve always had the passion for travel and I think that is what has driven a lot of our growth. BootsnAll can still be a mess to get around sometimes for regular and new users. Making it an experience that is a bit more obvious or personalized is our goal in 2007. Do what we have been doing, but instead of doing it in an average way or just above average…kick arse at it.

Thanks to all the folks that send in ideas to us. We read them and carefully consider them. Please keep sending them in.
